[pdftex] problem with acroread and type 1 font matrix

This is probably the wrong list since my problem is directly related
to acroread (and only indirectly to pdftex which apparently produces
an error-free PDF file), but I know that many of you have much
experience with pdf...

I have a Japanese subfont (dmjhira from wadalab's mincho-0-12) in
Type 1 format which has the following font matrix:

  [.001 0 0 .001 0 -0.16]

My Acrobat reader 4.0 (version x86 linux stdout0124 Jan 24 2000)
doesn't like this and says:

Unable to extract the embedded font 'WRRTQJ+dmjhira'. Some
characters may not display or print correctly.

Changing `-0.16' to `0' makes acroread 4.0 accept this font (at the
cost of glyphs with incorrect vertical offsets). This looks like a
bug in acroread.

Question 1: Is this a known problem? Does a newer version of acroread
exist (for Linux) which doesn't have this bug?

Question 2: Is there an easy (or not so easy) workaround? I'm willing
to use t1disasm and t1asm to manipulate the Japanese fonts directly,
but my knowledge of PS fonts is very limited...
