[pdftex] pdftex oddity???

pdftex is ok, though the version you use is known to have some
problems with tiff inclusion.

Yes. You can't use the acrobat reader to create PostScript.  It simply
has too many bugs.  Some people call it "acrobug".

Use pdftops which is part of the xpdf distribution.
