[pdftex] Default extension in pdftex.def?

just that almost everyone uses eps with dvips, so that's an easy choice
for a default, but with pdftex there's png jpg and pdf all getting used.
You showed the internal syntax with  \@namedef etc but you can use the
documented \DeclareGraphicsRule command in the preamble of your document
if you want to do this in a way that the tex file will work on other
sites,, or of course you can use a private config file.
