I think that taco is right:

grep 'fopen' OUT | perl -pe 's{(.+: )([0-9a-z]+)( = fopen.+)$}{$2}'
-|sort|uniq|nl|tail -1
 1 0x5585feec9070

with kpfonts:
grep 'fopen' OUT | perl -pe 's{(.+: )([0-9a-z]+)( = fopen.+)$}{$2}'
-|sort|uniq|nl|tail -1
  1036 0x55cea68eee50

So, imo in the second case  you are   running out of file descriptors.
