[OS X TeX] pdf illustration

Attached, the pdf file cover.pdf, note the lowercase German p and q.
Attached, the tex file, example.tex, which reads:

\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
\title{Example}
\maketitle
\begin{figure}[htb]
\centerline{\includegraphics{cover}}
\caption{yy}
\label{F:cover}
%Figure~\ref{F:cover}
\end{figure}
\end{document}

When I typeset, the German characters are missing from the illustration.

Wow. How?
