Howdy,

I don't understand. To use the biblatex package you need any the standard engines and use the latex format; so (pdf/xe/lua)latex. AFAIK all of these have the e-tex extensions built-in on modern TeX Distributions.

Any of the latexmk based engines in TeXShop automatically use biber rather than bibtex if needed.
