It seems appropriate to mention that, under Bernard Desgraupes tender ministrations, Alpha continues to go from strength to strength, including now both spell checking and its own pdf viewer.

I honestly don't know, since I have not used Emacs+AUCTeX (I tried to many years ago and gave up in frustration, but that may have been because I was so busy with other things at the time). There is quite a lot of automation available with LaTeXTools and Sublime. You can find the details here:

Off-topic, but how does it compare to Emacs+AUCTeX? I tried Sublime Text a while ago, and, while cool, I found the automation provided by AUCTeX to be (way) superior.

A little more than a year ago, I switched to Sublime Text for all my LaTeX'ing and haven't looked back. With LaTeXTools installed, you have a LaTeX-aware editor spell checker built in. And it has so many other cool LaTeX features.
