Hi Luis,

I haven't used old latex-dvips-ps2pdf (or pdflatex, for that matter) in years, except for testing, like just now.
It is high time we all use modern TeX engines that support Unicode properly without extra help.
I understand what you are saying, but do you really think
you are speaking for all use-cases here?
Is Unicode really a panacea for all modern typesetting?
Think about what would result for accessibility (that is, screen-reading
a full unicode representation) of a simple (3 character) piece of mathematics:
𝑥∈ℝ
would be read as:
MATHEMATICAL ITALIC SMALL X ELEMENT OF DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL R
when the LaTeX source of:
x \in \mathbb{R}
is much shorter, friendlier and easier for extracting the meaning.
And some authors might use \newcommand{\reals}{\mathbb{R}}
so that it would be input as:
x \in \reals
and could be arranged to read that way too.
(La)TeX should be about placing into the resulting PDF a way to efficiently
communicate the meaning, not about strictly following rules based upon
a “one size fits all” mentality.
Hope this helps.
Ross
