[OS X TeX] Assigning Skim or TeXShop to open a PDF file

How do you check if the execute bit is set on the file"

It seems to misbehave only if I specify Skim (for example) in the Get Info panel for that specific file. If I additionally do the “Change All …” then the document will open in Skim when double clicked. Hmmm. The problem is that I don’t necessarily want all PDF files to open in the same application.

This is an observation that I sent a little earlier that for some reason has not come back to me yet:

If the default is set to Preview in the Get Info panel, and I do the right click and select open with Skim, it does in fact open in Skim. Then when I change the default to Skim on the Get Info Panel (without doing a Change All), right click on the PDF file icon and select open with Skim, I get the slightly different error message:
