They *do use* MathJaX to display LaTeX math in their articles; see the 
page source of, for example,

    https://www.authorea.com/users/3/articles/32482/_show_article

So, if MathJaX can't display something, Authorea wouldn't also.

Fortunately, MathJaX ---a truly amazing system to display (La)TeX, 
MathML and AsciiMath--- is actively maintained. So if it can't display 
something now, chances are it will soon.
