As a simple example of the behavior, suppose I forget a $ sign in an in–line expression within Foucault.tex. TexShop shows me the error in a Console window, of course. But, when I correct the error, save the source, and try to compile again, I still get and error albeit a different one:

Clearly, something is hosed in Foucault.tex but I have no idea what it could be.

Herbert, Josep, Jean, and Ross ... *many* thanks for your help and suggestions! At first I thought the gods were punishing me for some infraction, but you told me my problem is a common one. That's a comfort! Also, the ^⌘A shortcut has made my life *much* easier.

Ross ... your suggestions to examine the .aux file, and to use your "cut" method (what I've known as a "binary search") will be sure to enable me to find my coding problem. I started with the "cut" method, thought I'd isolated the glitch, and then found that I hadn't. Both your methods will take more time than I have right now ... but I'm certainly going to continue them. If I find my problem, I'll post it to the list. If I don't, I'll have learned a bundle anyway, and and for that I'm grateful!

Thanks again!
