This looks like part of the initial header comment
    %!PS Adobe-3.1
either of the .eps file itself, or of an embedded sub-image.

You can open your image file in a plane text editor and search for this.
Probably you will find some characters immediately before it which can be safely removed. But work on a copy, so you can recover from any editing mistakes. 

Send me a copy of the file off-list. I'll see if I can get a version that works for both Ghostscript and earlier versions of Illustrator.
