Wikipedia might give a complete answer. (Maybe TeXShop's Help as  
well.) I am just mentioning that the first few lines which start with  
comment introducing characters (the "%" in TeX) and therefore are not  
directly meant for the (TeX) backend can be meaningful for a front-end  
(TeXShop can be called by this word) or an operating system.
