Look into your backups and restore teTeX partially. (I am keeping  
parts of teTeX to be able to compile a few TeX related software  
packages from Fink.)

I thought a few times of "upgrading" but I never saw an easy way to  
achieve it. TeX is not GPL'ed, so its sources can be obscured. (And  
it's a TeX Live decision which MacTeX follows.)
