It's now MacPorts. It's a system to install non-Mac OS X software in  
packages on a Mac and resolve all dependencies, i.e., it will also  
install all software a wanted package needs or uses.

MacPorts needs Apple's Developer Tools and X11 (User and SDK  
packages). And it installs software packages by compiling them.  
Sometimes this can take a day ...
