Thanks a lot, Jan, for identifying the real problem.

(I had previously excluded the hypothesis that there could be
anything wrong with ps2pdf, because the two.ps produced on the
linux machine was apparently correctly distilled by ps2pdf.
It turns out that psnup on the linux machine has some letter
size involved and that the mac ps2pdf correctly copes with that
(inserting extra margins, as inherent problem with letter size).)

It is now another discussion whether the MacTeX installer could
do anything to set this up to work out of the box.
