I may be partially responsible for this thread. I was trying to help a  
user through private email and some of our conversation leaked out  
onto the list. The user was trying to reconfigure TeXShop for the  
MacPorts distribution of TeX (which is easy) and trying to typeset a  
Scientific Word document containing illustrations (which is harder).  
It took several emails before I understood the Scientific Word  
connection. Apologies.

As far as I know, ALL of the standard front ends and TeX utilities can  
easily be configured for the MacPort's distribution of TeX.
