An alternative approach is to define a user macro in TexShop instead
of using autocompletio: Open the macro editor, create a new item and
type
^{#SEL##INS#}
Then, select <command><shift>^ as the keyboard shortcut (or use some
other combination of keys, if ^ is still a problem). This will print ^
{} and place the cursor in the braces. On my US keyboard at least,
this works.
