This is the route I would have taken. In fact, I did once, with a
book on LaTeX 2.09 ---I told the author we had two options: 1) we
converted his document to LaTeX2e (compatibility mode of LaTeX caused
many errors), with the time it meant or 2) we used his printed copy
for copy-editing, he applied corrections and format his book to our
specifications. He chose this last way, and all went well.
