At present the gwTeX version of MacTeX is based on the latest gwTeX  
(31 December 2006), and here's what the Readme says regarding pdfTeX  
and TeXLive:

2006/12/28:
• Added missing documentation check to subset build procedure.
• Includes pdfTeX 3.141592-1.40.0-rc4-2.2 (pdfTeX 1.40)
• TL SVN revision 2991
