[OS X TeX] Where to put file like "longdiv.tex"?

Yes, that's alright! The first difference is that with texhash you  
get a few output files that all have exactly the same name, while  
with TeXShop you get a few files with the same name and all with a  
different extension.

The second difference is that texhash works on "system files" while  
TeXShop usually only handles files that belong to its user (while  
also /using/ in some way some of the "system files") and are  
restricted to some file name extensions (tex, aux, bib, ...). Texhash  
has no such restrictions.
