[OS X TeX] TExXhop can not find eps files/graphicspath

I have decided to collect a set of my eps figures in a common folder,  
located above the folder I  am working in.

I wanted to place the path to the file in the graphics call, e.g.  
includegraphics{../figs/figure1.eps} but Texshop reports that it can  
not find the file.

I tried including \graphicspath{{../figs/}} but that gave the same  
response.

When I switched to a pdf version of the file  and pdflatex instead   
of Tex and ghostscript it worked in both cases.

Can someone offer an  explanation?
