[OS X TeX] Can you hyphenate math?

I have a longish in-line equation that sticks at the end of a line. I  
tried \- in the middle of the equation and i was surprised to find  
out that the equation was hyphenated at that point, but a small dash  
was also printed in the output. Is there a way to suggest hyphenation  
points for in-line math?
