[OS X TeX] pdftex created pdfs on palm pilots

A colleague is reading a manuscript of mine produced in TeXShop via  
pdftex 1-10a, pdf version 1.4. It is his habit to put such files on  
his Palm Pilot so he can read them easily at will. When opened in the  
Palm, the pdftex produced pdf appears without any spaces as in the  
original opened on his laptop. Opening the original and saving it as  
a pdf from Preview turns each page into an image.

Can anyone account for this behavior and suggest remedies.
