[OS X TeX] of order symbol

[KL Tah]

I'm trying to typeset the 'of order' symbol (tilda positioned in the 
middle) to indicate order of magnitude and tried \~ but it did not 
work. \url{~} raises the symbol to the top which isn't quite what I'm 
looking for. Any ideas?
