[OS X TeX] font trouble

It seems you installed OS X and instructed the OS X installer to  
leave out the BSD tools. TeX Live (and teTeX) TeX require these tools  
(like basename, sed, awk, etc) to be available.

Strange though that you did not get a warning from the i-Package. The  
configure stage checks for /usr/bin/grep to be available, which afaik  
is part of the BSD support in OS X. If you have that you should also  
have the basename command.

environment (e.g. because you have changed ~/.MacOSX/ 
environment.plist. i-Installer is slightly protected against a  
damaged environment, but most other tools (like TeXShop) are not.  
Hence, the i-Package might install and configure OK, but outside i- 
Package/i-Installer TeX may not work because your environment is not OK.

All in all, this does not look like font trouble but system trouble.
