It seems you installed OS X and instructed the OS X installer to
leave out the BSD tools. TeX Live (and teTeX) TeX require these tools
(like basename, sed, awk, etc) to be available.
Strange though that you did not get a warning from the i-Package. The
configure stage checks for /usr/bin/grep to be available, which afaik
is part of the BSD support in OS X. If you have that you should also
have the basename command.
Another potential source for a problem like this is a damaged OS X
installation
Another potential source for a problem like this is a damaged
environment (e.g. because you have changed ~/.MacOSX/
environment.plist. i-Installer is slightly protected against a
damaged environment, but most other tools (like TeXShop) are not.
Hence, the i-Package might install and configure OK, but outside i-
Package/i-Installer TeX may not work because your environment is not OK.
All in all, this does not look like font trouble but system trouble.
