Actually, the documentation shows how to do this a tad better:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{empheq} % loads amsmath by itself
\begin{document}
\begin{empheq}[left=\empheqlbrace]{align}
   \label{eq:1}
   E &= mc^2,\\
   \label{eq:2}
   pV &= \frac m\mu RT.
\end{empheq}
\end{document}
