maybe that was indeed the case. By default there is a limit of 100  
processes per user. If this is reached, no other processes (including  
e.g. latex) can be started and wired things begin to happen as most  
applications don't expect this to happen. To increase the process  
limit follow the description here:

If you run a lot of small processes which themselves spawn other  
processes (as I do very often), this limit is reached way to soon.

Maybe this was the case as your problems with TeXShop arose.
