[OS X TeX] "Too many open files" error

We are creating the proceedings for a meeting by including abstracts  
as individual PDF files via the pdfpages package. There are over 300  
abstracts in this meeting and near the end of the compile we get the  
following error:

/usr/local/teTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin-current/pdflatex: ./ 
ProceedingsAbstracts/Bednarcyk-180135.pdf: Too many open files

How do we overcome this limit in pdflatex so that we can get this  
thing to typeset from start to finish? I have all the latest TeX  
updates from gwTeX.

A quick solution would be most appreciated since we need to get this  
thing to the printer later this week. :-)
