[OS X TeX] epstopdf automatic updates to pdf

Thanks to all those who replied to my question, which I now realize was
somewhat off base.  The difference in behavior I initially attributed to
  some difference between the two systems was, in fact, due to whether
or not the .eps extension was present.

As Andre and Herb note, the behavior I *thought* I saw would certainly
be nice.  If Maarten or others would give me a little more of a hint, I
might try to pursue using make for this.
