This looks like a linebreak problem. Either your apacite.sty got
damaged, for example by a mistaken Mac->Unix line endings conversion (in
reality it has DOS line endings), or your rather old (even in Fink
terms) latex doesn't understand DOS line endings and adds a newline
after each line.
