[OS X TeX] Large Figure in Document? (and slow response of TeXShop)

I recently discovered that you can actually use latex math in  
illustrator CS2 relatively easily:
-use texhsop to select math from the preview window and save the  
selection by dragging it to the desktop
-open the file in illustrator - because of font substitutions, the  
illustrator file will look wrong but that's ok.
-save the illustrator file as either pdf or eps
-include the eps or pdf created by illustrator in texshop and  
typeset: the output will generally look correct and will appear in  
the original font used to typeset the math.

Caveats:
-the eps and pdf files generated by illustrator are in the correct  
font only when typeset in texshop. Preview, illustrator (and even  
texshop, if you use it to simply open the graphics file) will show  
the contents using substituted fonts.
-most math (integrals, factions, etc) survive the process; some  
glyphs (i.e. "*") do not make it.
-when you open the clipped selection in Illustrator, you actually get  
a clipped image of the entire page that the clipping came from. It  
takes some cleanup effort to unclip and delete the unnecessary material.
-I don't know how the final file looks and prints on a different  
computer from the one used to generate the  output.
