[OS X TeX] $PATH question -- somewhat OT

I was checking the PATH variable in connection with another problem  
and came across what looks like an anomaly. If I use Terminal and  
type 'echo $PATH' I get this:

/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/ 
powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/local/bin

but in xterm I get this:

/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin

Why are these different?

Always amazed by how much is left to learn about unix.
