[OS X TeX] how to convert .doc to .TEX?

(1) The trouble with the MS Word —> rtf —> rtf2latex —> LaTeX route, at
least for me, was precisely that once I had removed from the MS Word
document math and tables, there wasn't much left and what text there was
I could just copy-paste from MS Word into TeXshop and reformat there.

(2) I am not having too much luck with AbiWord.
First, TeXshop won't typeset it as given.
Second because, for example, while I assume that Toc is short for Table
of Contents, I don't know what to do with stuff like
\hypertarget{_Toc457923015}
that the console objects to.
Third, because I have not yet been able to devise a routine for cleaning
up Abi's code.
But I have not yet given up. I just don't have much time.

(3) On the other hand, if instead of copy-pasting the text directly into
TeXshop, I copy-paste it into Abi, Abi recognizes formats like italics
and bold so that when it is saved as LaTeX and inserted into the TeXshop
file, it is already formatted. That could be an economy if you have a
lot of it.

(4) Someone suggested

to use writer2latex (w2l). I use it normally to convert from Word to LaTeX and does
a good job. First read your Word file in Open Office, save it in Open Office
format (the WP of OO is called Writer, hencce the name) and run the script on
the OO file. Good results, excellent customisation.

My problem with that I have had trouble with OO on the Mac. But I will
try that too.

Regards
