[OS X TeX] Equations in picture environment

Hi,
does anyone happen to know how to typeset equations in the picture 
environement?

more specifically, i am using axodraw to produce flowcharts but can't seem 
to get the equations to work out. For eg.

\begin{center} \begin{picture}(800,800)(0,0)
\SetPFont{Times}{16}
\SetScale{2.0}
\SetColor{Magenta}
\ArrowLine(200,40)(200,10)   \ArrowLine(200,100)(200,40)
...
...
..
..
\BText(200,385){Get $\alpha$}


just makes it print $\alpha$ directly.

any help is much appreciated.
