Howdy,

Hmmm... It does look as though you have an older version of the system than
I have (latest TL2005).

So far so good.

Was this the first run? The .aux file seems to already exist and there is a
small (unrelated?) problem.

Now comes the processing of the figure-fig1.tex file using altpdflatex:

The latest systems use pdfeTeX with the -dvi option to do the processing but
I'm not sure that makes any difference.

Ok... The figure-fig1.pdf file has been created and should now be cropped

Now it should be properly cropped.

Ok... You should have a generated figure-fig1.pdf file. Open it in TeXShop
(drag it onto the TeXShop icon in the Dock) and a Preview window should
open. The image should be closely cropped (i.e. You should see the image
against a white background and the ``page boundary'' with lots of gray
(outside the page). If you do NOT see that please send me your
figure-fig1.tex, tmp.inputs and figure-fig1.pdf file.

This all could be due to your older system. You might try moving that
pdftricks.sty file that I played with and let the system try using the
original. I changed the processing since the older version had some problems
getting the Bounding Box correct under certain circumstances.

Good Luck,
