I would suggest keeping it simple for now.  Maybe:
   - show the actual syntax (with macro) in the edit citation view
   - show the evaluated field in the bibliography listing view

(Handling string definitions from other files could introduce some 
twists; in the case that you
can't identify a string, I'd recommend leaving it unevaluated and then 
trying to hilight the problem to the
user--eg, put the field in red or italics or some-such)
