[OS X TeX] typesetting time increases greatly with microtype?

I think so, since expanded fonts are created on the fly. Could you try
with
\usepackage[protrusion=true,expansion=false]{microtype}
and time that?
I thinks for most texts, this is actually preferred, but that might be
a presonal preference.
