Thanks Matt,

I managed to get it running yesterday night.  The trick is to show
./configure where certain things (~/Library/texmf, auctex, emacs) are
located.  One get can get options with ./configure --help, and using
all location options, it compiles and installs like a charm.  BTW, I
am using carbon emacs, so it works.

I find it very useful.
