If you want to have italics displayed in a message, you should mark up
text like this: /italics/, i.e. the word to be displayed in italics
should be included in forward slashes at the start and at the end.

Mozilla and Gnus are able to display plain text markup like /italics/,
_underline_, or *bold face*.

However, Mozilla does not send any multipart messages if you switch to
plain text only in the compose options. Your compose window will not
show any formatting icons, then. So if you still can see buttons for
"I", "B", and "U" in your compose window your settings are not
correct.
