The issue is not that modern systems cannot handle more than 8 letters,
the problem lies in the CD-ROM format, which cannot guarantee more than
8 letters across platforms.

fancyheadings.sty changed its name to fancyhdr.sty just for the reason
mentioned above. Although I think that longer names are a good idea,
and with both the Joliet and rock-ridge extensions enabled on CD's (the
default when you burn on Mac OS X), it should be no problem at all, on
Windows, Mac OS X, and most unix systems. There might still be systems
that don't support either of these though (Classic Mac OS comes to
mind).
