Well, <www.mactex.org> doesn't exist yet. How much does buying the 
name/hosting/bandwidth cost? :)

I had this though going to bed. This is what current Mac-TeX 
(<http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/>) is *supposed* to do, but obviously 
they can't host all and everyone's software. You are right that there 
are many different ``getting started'' guides that only help to confuse 
new users (which one do I follow?).

I revisited the "LaTeX and Mac OS X" page and was very impressed. Maybe 
that at least could be integrated with the existing Mac-TeX page.
