I've seen this sort of thing before, but can't say what the cause is.  
It sounds like you've got a workaround, but you can also get a 
formatted reference list from BibDesk <http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/> 
as RTF, which is my workaround for this sitution.  If you're 
interested, here's how:

- Turn on TeX previewing in BibDesk's preferences
- Select the references you want in the list
- Hit cmd-T to get the previewer; the top of the split window is PDF, 
the bottom is RTF.  Copy and paste, or use the Copy As RTF menu item.
