The bitmapped CM fonts are created directly from Knuth's METAFONT 
sources, and, if configured for your printer, will give the highest 
quality output possible, especially when using non-standard sizes. That 
said, you'd need to be a real pro to notice the difference.

(The size thing would be the most obvious ... because the CM fonts have 
optical scaling, they change shape subtly as their size varies. The 
scalable fonts only have a few different shapes available (from 5pt to 
17pt at most) and linearly scale those to get arbitrary sizes.)
