You're right in all your assumptions, and you're lucky, because
free TeX on MacOS X is very nice. Go to
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html. Here you
will find instructions and links for downloading and installing
everything you need. There are two main parts: the TeX engine,
(almost 60 MB), including the fonts, the actual typesetting
program, and even Ghostscript, and TexShop (just 1020 KB), the
beautiful front-end where you can edit and display the output.
You can also keep using BBEdit or whatever you want to. After
these are installed you will have magical powers: you will be
able to double-click on a postscript file and see it displayed,
or make a pdf file from your TeX output.
