I was more of a usage problem. Putting too much stuff in the second 
parameter.

I typed:

\lettrine{B}{blah .... entire paragraph} %wrong way

instead of:

\lettrine{B}{blah}.... rest of paragraph} %correct way

Thank all of you for your help. I'm going to crawl into a corner hide 
for a while.
