This is exactly my experience---with one exception: running "Spelling… " 
over a document caused it to flag \documentclass but no other latex 
commands and certainly not \emph, of which there were plenty. BTW at the 
time of running this over this old document, 'Check spelling as you 
type" was checked, but of course there was no new typing for it to work 
on. But this means that the program has two ways of working, and the 
filter only works on one of them.
