[OS X TeX] Problem with TeXShop using SMB share

I just got set up to mount my departmental home directory via Samba on my
Mac laptop (Pismo, 10.1.5). When I open a tex file from this SMB share in
TeXShop, TeXShop cannot tex the file; it complains that it could not save
the document (even if I have not modified it). Subsequently the tex file's
name has changed to "filename~.tex".
This problem does not occur using teTeX at the command line. It also does
not occur when I invode tex from emacs.
It is not clear whether the propblem lies in Samba, MacOS X, or in TeXShop.
I have heard of similar problems with Samba-shares mounted in Win98.
The problem appears sufficiently mysterious and wierd, that I don't really
expect Richard Koch and friends to fix it in their abundant free time. :-)
I think this is a file-locking problem, with TeXShop and teTeX both opening
the same file, but I can't be sure.
I just want to point the problem out, and invite comments from others on how
Samba works with TeXShop for them.
