pdftex does not use ghostscript. It produces PDF directly.

Also, pdftex on your Sun workstation may not be the same version as the 
one on Mac OS X ("pdftex --version" will tell you). Most pdftex's out 
there are pretty old. The same goes for ghostscript, which is available 
in many versions, all producing (slightly) different PDF.
