[lucida] Install lucida from Y&Y on MacTeX

 Hi all!Nope, it didn't work.
Now I get
------
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+70/600 --dpi 670 hlcrv

mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for hlcrv. mktexpk: perhaps hlcrv is missing from the map file.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.----------------
I tried to mimic the lucida installation folders and paths of Bruno, and after that I have run
sudo mktexlsr
and then
sudo updmap-sys

I noticed that in my localtexmf folder coming from my earlier (working...) MikTeX installs both on Win and on iMac I missed some files which were listed in Bruno's installation. I downloaded them from CTAN. Is this the same thing or there is some missmatch due to different releases of Lucida (I have very old files from Y&Y and BlueSky ....) over the years?
I could post the mktexlsr.log and updmap.log
updmap-sys  did complain like this:
-------------------

WARNING: updmap has found mismatched files!

The following files have been generated as listed above,

but will not be found because overriding files exist, listed below.

Perhaps you have run updmap-user in the past, but are running updmap-sys

now.  Once you run updmap-user the first time, you have to keep using it,

or else remove the personal configuration files it creates (the ones

listed below).

 builtin35.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/builtin35.map

 download35.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/download35.map

 kanjix.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvipdfmx/updmap/kanjix.map

 pdftex.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map

 pdftex_dl14.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex_dl14.map

 pdftex_ndl14.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex_ndl14.map

 ps2pk.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/ps2pk.map

 psfonts.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts.map

 psfonts_pk.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts_pk.map

 psfonts_t1.map: /var/root/Library/texlive/2023/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts_t1.map

(Run updmap --help for full documentation of updmap.)

---------------------
Yes, I did run updmap-user in the past. But then I uninstalled texlive completey and started a new fresh install, which works. Does macos or texlive remember forever?
Thanks again!
Maurizio

  Thanks!
I'll try in the next couple of days and I'll report back.

 Hi Maurizio, hi Reinhard,

For some reason I didn't get Maurizio's original message but got Reinhard's answer (I checked the Junk mailboxes, Maurizio's message isn't there).

Anyway, a classical problem on the Mac is having a combination of

- per-user setup, located in ~/Library/texlive/<year>/texmf-var/fonts/map/updmap/ and managed via updmap, and

- system-wide setup, located in /usr/local/texlive/<year>/texmf-var/fonts/map/updmap/ and managed via "sudo updmap-sys".

In that event, once the per-user setup is created by running "updmap" (without the -sys) it is the only one that is taken into account, no matter what. Whatever you put in texmf-local and whatever you do with updmap-sys afterwards, it won't matter.

In case that's the cause of your problem, just trash ~/Library/texlive/<year>/texmf-var/fonts/map/updmap/ and redo the magic with updmap-sys.

Personally I haven't run "sudo updmap-sys --enable [...]" or similar in years. What I do is create a file /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/web2c/updmap.cfg containing lines like

Map lucida.map

then run "sudo updmap-sys" (it is run automatically at the end of the MacTeX install process). You're done! See "texdoc updmap".

Attached is a listing of my Lucida Type 1 install, which is working on an M1 MacBook Pro with MacTeX 2023 (over the years I have used various Lucida setups, originally one for the Mac purchased from Blue Sky Research in the 1990s -- fonts in LWFN format and metrics in suitcase format -- which I converted to teTeX, gwTex then MacTeX -- fonts in PFB format and metrics in TFM and VF formats -- by the turn of the century, then new setups purchased from TUG and PCTeX).

Hope this works,

Bruno
